We Will Tell Prehistory in a Modern Way
An expanded museum pavilion, which will be built in three years at the regional Archaeological Museum in Biskupin, will offer visitors an immersive and engaging journey into the past. Inside the new permanent exhibition, guests will learn about the life of the inhabitants of the Biskupin settlement from 2,700 years ago. The investment will be funded through the regional programme European Funds Kujawsko-Pomorskie (EFKP).
“The Archaeological Museum in Biskupin is the most recognisable archaeological brand in the country. Narrative exhibition routes, multimedia and interactive stations with sensory elements will allow us to present prehistory in a modern way,” emphasised Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The concept for the new pavilion was developed by the Wrocław-based architectural studio Prolog, which also prepared the construction design. The plan includes preserving the southern wing of the existing pavilion (which will become the central entrance hall) and arranging all functions on a single level, as well as creating a “living roof” with vegetation and nesting areas for birds.
As part of the investment, the existing museum building will gain new exhibition and educational spaces. A new permanent exhibition presenting the heritage of Biskupin will also be created. The modernisation will make the site more accessible for school groups, while the new exhibition will enhance the museum’s appeal.
A key feature of the permanent exhibition will be a large-scale aquarium recreating an “archaeological wet site” with submerged wooden elements, highlighting the natural preservative properties of water.
The museum is supported in this investment by the regional company Kujawsko-Pomorskie Inwestycje Regionalne. A tender to select the contractor will be announced in the coming weeks, and construction work is expected to begin later this year.
Funding from the regional programme EFKP will amount to PLN 65 million, with the total project value reaching PLN 95 million. Completion is planned for 2029.
