Vistula Festival – Experience the Spirit of Poland’s Greatest River
From 7 to 16 August, the Vistula Festival 2026 returns for its landmark 10th edition, celebrating the rich heritage, traditions and culture of Poland’s iconic Vistula River. As the country’s largest river festival – and the biggest event of its kind in this part of Europe – it brings together history, craftsmanship, music, food and spectacular river journeys in a truly unique setting.
This year, the festival flotilla will travel 160 kilometres along the Vistula through the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, stopping in nine riverside towns and cities. The festival is supported by the regional self-government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

The Vistula Festival was first held in 2017, during Poland’s Year of the Vistula River. Inspired by the famous Loire Festival in Orléans, France, it has developed a distinctive identity of its own. Unlike its French counterpart, the Vistula Festival is a travelling celebration that moves from town to town, following the course of the river. Visiting French boatmen have repeatedly described this mobile format as the festival’s most original and memorable feature.
At the heart of the festival is Poland’s largest gathering of traditional river vessels. Beautiful wooden boats – many of them meticulously reconstructed from historical designs – recreate the era when the Vistula served as one of Europe’s busiest commercial waterways in the 16th century. Poland boasts an extraordinary boatbuilding tradition, reflected in the remarkable variety of historic craft presented during the festival, from large cargo boats to smaller working vessels, each representing centuries of river life and craftsmanship.
The Vistula Festival is far more than a maritime event. It is a celebration of the river’s cultural legacy, showcasing traditional crafts, music, literature and regional cuisine. Throughout the festival, visitors can watch master craftspeople demonstrate historic skills such as wooden boatbuilding, rope-making, ship carpentry and traditional fishing techniques. Themed cruises feature poetry and music inspired by the river, while historical performances bring centuries-old customs and stories vividly to life with a touch of humour.
Food lovers can discover another side of the Vistula’s heritage at the “Vistula Flavours” market, where regional specialities from communities along the river are prepared and served, offering visitors a taste of Poland’s diverse culinary traditions.
Each stop along the festival route has its own unique relationship with the Vistula. Whether on lively urban waterfronts or peaceful natural riverbanks, the festival highlights local traditions and stories, reminding audiences of the river’s lasting importance to the communities that have flourished along its banks for centuries.
Marking its tenth anniversary, this year’s edition places even greater emphasis on participation and education. Visitors will find an expanded programme of interactive workshops, demonstrations and historical re-enactments that recreate everyday riverside life from centuries past, inviting audiences of all ages to become part of the experience.

Visitors can look forward to exhibitions, concerts, spectacular historical performances, free cruises aboard traditional wooden boats, educational activities, photography workshops, meetings with people whose lives are closely connected with the river, sailing regattas and entertainment for both children and adults on land, on the water and even on the Vistula’s islands.
One of the festival’s most eagerly anticipated traditions is the organised swim across the Vistula. Supervised by professional lifeguards, this unique event will take place in Toruń on 14 August.
A signature feature of the Vistula Festival is its atmospheric river parades. Held both during the day and after dark, these processions combine beautifully restored historic boats, carefully selected live music and impressive visual effects to create unforgettable spectacles on the water.
