We Invite You to Chełmno for the Światłoczuły Festival
From 27 to 29 August, the historic town of Chełmno will be transformed into an extraordinary gallery of light art. Visitors will be able to see 12 installations created by artists and art collectives from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Germany and Armenia. For three evenings, light, sound, animation and modern technologies will bring the market square, city gates, Planty parkland and lesser-known corners of the town to life. Admission is free.
The Światłoczuły Festival draws on the best traditions of international light festivals, making use of the unique character of Chełmno, a town situated on nine hills with a remarkably well-preserved medieval old town. Its historic architecture will become not only a backdrop but also a central element of artistic stories combining the town’s history with nature, ecology, children’s imagination and the latest developments in multimedia art.
“The light festival in Chełmno enriches the cultural and tourist offering of our region, presenting its heritage in a modern and exceptionally attractive form. I invite you to Chełmno!” – says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
One of the festival’s main attractions will be the immersive installation “Flora Spectrum” by the Hungarian Lightspray Visual group, presented in the market square and transforming the urban space into a colourful fantasy garden. The façade of the town hall will become the screen for “Heart of the City”, a projection mapping by Łukasz Wiese telling the story of Chełmno and its residents.
The event’s international character will also be highlighted by installations by artists from Romania, Germany and Hungary, including “Facelessmen”, “The Super Magic Stone Circle” and “Hidden Garden”. The artists have presented their work at prestigious light festivals in cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, Sydney and Singapore.
The programme will also feature interactive projects engaging the audience, such as the Czech installation “Pig Farm”, which responds to touch with light, and “Animals”, combining art, technology and an environmental message. Chełmno’s history and children’s imagination will be brought to life by the “Guardians of the Gate” projection mapping, based on works created by children taking part in a competition organised by the Chełmno Cultural Centre.
The festival route will also include the audiovisual installation “Kosmosny”, “Shadows of History”, the multisensory “Between the Words” and “Hydro Breath” near the water tower. The installations can be discovered in various parts of the town – from the market square and Grudziądzka Gate, through the Planty and Memory and Tolerance Park, to Kościelna and Klasztorna streets and the area around the Church of the Holy Spirit.
Organisers have prepared specially designated parking areas for visitors. An installation map is also available, showing the locations of all the installations and making it easier to plan your festival route and see the main attractions.
The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Self-Government supports the organisation of the event.
