Travel by train to Kcynia is likely to be possible again in just six months
The Regional Assembly is considering today (19 June) a resolution related to restoring rail services to Kcynia in Nakło County. If approved, trains could begin operating on the line as early as this winter. Under an agreement with the Wielkopolska Region, the services would be operated by Wielkopolska Railways (Koleje Wielkopolskie). The railway line connecting Nakło nad Notecią, Kcynia and the regional border is currently undergoing extensive modernisation carried out by PKP Polish Railway Lines, the national rail infrastructure manager.
“Expanding the regional rail network remains one of our priorities. I am pleased that, after more than 20 years, Kcynia is returning to Poland’s railway map. The Rail Pact, which outlines the development of railway infrastructure in our region, also includes the modernisation of the Kcynia–Szubin–Bydgoszcz route,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The regional government will allocate PLN 5.5 million annually to finance rail services between Nakło, Kcynia and the border with the Wielkopolska Region. Launching the services will be possible once the ongoing infrastructure works are completed and the line is reopened.
Modernisation is currently underway on the Gołańcz–Kcynia section of railway line no. 356 in the Wielkopolska Region. The project is valued at PLN 57 million. The Kcynia–Nakło section of railway line no. 281 is also being upgraded with PKP Polish Railway Lines’ own funds, amounting to PLN 46.5 million.
On 12 January, Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak, Marshal Piotr Całbecki, Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska and PKP Polish Railway Lines Management Board Member Maciej Kaczorek signed a Rail Pact in Włocławek, defining the key directions of cooperation for the coming years.
Among the priority investments included in the pact is the modernisation and electrification of railway line no. 356, which will eventually enable direct train services from Bydgoszcz to Kcynia via Szubin.
The project is planned in two stages:
- Stage I – Bydgoszcz–Szubin
- Stage II – Szubin–Kcynia
The Kcynia rail connection is one of several services reactivated by the regional government.
Since December 2025, thanks to cooperation between local authorities—including Aleksandrów County, the towns of Aleksandrów Kujawski and Ciechocinek, the Aleksandrów Kujawski municipality, and the Marshal’s Office—trains have been running daily on the Toruń–Aleksandrów Kujawski–Ciechocinek route. In a few days, a direct connection between Bydgoszcz and Ciechocinek will also be launched.
This winter, rail services on the Rypin–Brodnica and Laskowice Pomorskie–Wierzchucin routes will also be restored.
Financial compensation paid by the regional government to rail operators selected through public tender procedures—Arriva and Polregio—will reach a record PLN 267 million in 2026. This amount also includes infrastructure access charges and station fees, which total PLN 37 million.
The regional government currently operates a growing fleet of 33 modern trains. Next year, additional units manufactured by the Bydgoszcz-based company Pesa will enter service. The cost of the seven newly ordered trainsets amounts to PLN 330 million.
There is more good news. The recently announced concept for Poland’s integrated national rail network includes provisions for new railway connections in our region, as well as high-speed rail services.
