Mr. Zygmunt Paczkowski Celebrated His 100th Birthday
A resident of Inowrocław, he is a passionate DIY enthusiast and a man of many talents. The birthday visit was paid by the President of the Regional Parliament, Elżbieta Piniewska. The jubilarian was honored with the Marshal’s Medal Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis.
He was born on April 12, 1926, in Inowrocław, into a family with artistic and craft traditions. His father, Leon, was a roofer, and his mother, Maria (née Lewandowska), ran a shop with painting supplies. Both painted as a hobby—it was in the family home that he developed a sensitivity to beauty and a love of creating. He grew up with two sisters, Wanda and Stefania, and his carefree childhood was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II.
During the occupation, he worked in a roofing workshop, and toward the end of the war he was forced by the occupiers to dig anti-tank trenches. After the war, he returned to education with determination—he completed an adult high school and a technical secondary school, earning a qualification as a mechanical technician. He spent his professional life at the Inowrocław chemical works, where he served, among other roles, as a shift supervisor and head of the transport base. Even in retirement, he returned to work, supporting younger colleagues and sharing his experience.
Life did not spare him difficult moments—he married twice and lost both of his wives. He has two daughters, Joanna and Maria. He is a proud grandfather of three grandchildren and great-grandfather of three great-grandchildren, and family gatherings are the most precious moments for him.
He has always been a man of many passions. DIY was in his blood—he could not only repair almost anything, but also create things from scratch, including his own house. He was interested in photography, collected cameras, rode bicycles and motorcycles, and had a special fondness for his Trabant. He created stained glass, sewed, and still plays the harmonica—despite never having learned to read music.
He is known as an exceptionally precise, hardworking, and helpful person. His memory and sense of humor are admirable—he eagerly shares stories from the past, often with a twinkle in his eye. His life is a testament to the generation that built post-war Poland—patiently, consistently, and with the belief that even the most difficult experiences can be turned into something good.
