Economic Development Council: Amendment of the Regional Development Strategy, Demographics, Economic Potential, and Security on the Agenda

The Regional Economic Development Council today adopted an opinion regarding the amendment of the regional development strategy. The conclusion of the document includes both a call and a commitment by the council to actively participate in developing provisions related to directions for economic development. The council also continued its debate on demographic challenges. The meeting was chaired by Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The principles and timetable for work on the Regional Development Strategy 2035, adopted by the regional assembly in February, formally concern a new document. In practice and conceptually, however, work has already begun on amending the currently binding strategy. This is necessary because a strategy is a living document that must undergo continuous evaluation, confront its assumptions with current economic and social realities, and be updated and refined accordingly. The rapporteur for the opinion adopted today was Adam Stańczyk, Director of the Department of Development Planning and Regional Cooperation at the Marshal’s Office.

During the meeting, draft analyses concerning depopulation issues were also presented. The author and rapporteur of the demographic study was Grzegorz Grześkiewicz, President of the Bydgoszcz branch of the Polish Economic Society. The analysis concerning the structure and economic potential of the region was presented by Krzysztof Sikora, President of the Economic Assembly of the Region.

The council also decided to begin work on an opinion concerning security, the defence industry, and the broadly understood resilience of the region to crises.

Established in September 2025, the forty-seven-member council represents business, academic, local government, and labour market communities. Its mission is to support the regional government in matters related to shaping economic policy. This year, the council is focusing on issues including the role of the economy in the regional development strategy, depopulation and its causes, security and crisis resilience solutions, innovation and research implementation, as well as economic promotion and education.
