Your Blood Can Save a Life

Despite advances in medicine, no substance has yet been developed that can fully replace human blood. On Thursday, June 18, a special mobile donation unit from the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Bydgoszcz, where people can donate blood voluntarily, will be stationed at Theatre Square in front of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń. We celebrated World Blood Donor Day on June 14. During our monthly blood donation campaigns this year alone, more than 160 people have donated blood, helping collect a total of 62 liters.

“Your blood can save another person’s health or life. I encourage everyone who is able to do so to take part in our campaign,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who Can Become a Donor?

Blood can be donated by healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 65 who show no symptoms of infection and weigh at least 50 kilograms (110 lbs).

Anyone wishing to donate blood should bring a photo ID confirming their identity and PESEL number. Before donating, donors should drink approximately 2 liters of fluids (water, juice) within 24 hours before donation, get sufficient sleep and rest, eat a light meal, avoid fatty foods, especially those of animal origin, if possible, limit smoking and avoid alcohol, including on the day before donation.

Blood donation is completely safe. Only single-use, sterile equipment is used, eliminating any risk of infection from blood-borne viruses. A visit to the mobile donation unit begins with completing a questionnaire, registration, a blood sample collection, and a medical examination. The blood collection itself takes approximately 5 – 10 minutes. In most cases, one unit of whole blood (450 ml) is collected. Afterward, donors rest for about 15 minutes and receive a calorie replacement package consisting of chocolate and juice.

More information is available on the website of the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre.

The Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center’s mobile unit will be parked in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, June 18. Staff will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
