Year of Cinema People: Tomasz Sekielski to Meet Readers in Toruń
Tomasz Sekielski – one of Poland’s best-known journalists, reporters, and documentary filmmakers – will be a guest at the Copernicus Library in Toruń (Książnica Kopernikańska). The meeting will take place on September 8, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at 8 Juliusza Słowackiego Street. Admission is free. The project is co-financed by the Book Institute from a targeted grant provided by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, as well as from the budget of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Self-Government.
The event, entitled “Journalist, Writer, Director,” will provide an opportunity to discuss various aspects of the guest’s creative and professional work. For many years, Tomasz Sekielski has combined journalism with literature and documentary filmmaking, tackling social and cultural issues that are often difficult and provoke public debate.
The conversation, moderated by Magdalena Geraga, will cover topics including journalism, working on investigative reports and documentaries, writing books, as well as changes taking place in the media and ways of telling stories about important issues facing contemporary society.
Tomasz Sekielski was born on January 24, 1974, in Bydgoszcz. He began his career in radio before moving into television. He worked, among others, for TVN and TVN24, where he became known as a reporter and investigative journalist. He later also worked with TVP and other media organizations.
Over time, his journalistic work became increasingly connected with documentary filmmaking. He is the author and director of documentaries addressing important social and political issues. Of particular significance were the films “Tell No One” (Tylko nie mów nikomu) and “Playing Hide-and-Seek” (Zabawa w chowanego), which dealt with the sexual abuse of minors within the Catholic Church. Their release sparked a nationwide debate and became one of the most significant events in Polish public life in recent years. Sekielski’s body of work also includes the documentaries “Puppet Masters” (Władcy marionetek) and “Roots of Evil” (Korzenie zła), which focused on the SKOK scandal. For his filmmaking, he has received, among other awards, the Polish Film Award Eagle.
His professional career reflects the transformation of the Polish media landscape. He has worked in radio, television, and the press, and from 2022 to 2024 served as editor-in-chief of Newsweek Polska. He also co-creates online media projects, including channels run together with his brother, Marek Sekielski. His work has received numerous awards, including Grand Press, Wiktor, Telekamery, and MediaTory awards, as well as the Andrzej Woyciechowski Award.
Literature is another important area of Tomasz Sekielski’s work. He is the author of crime novels, including the “Safe” (Sejf) series, as well as the thrillers “The Smell of Drought” (Zapach suszy) and “The Taste of Drought” (Smak suszy). He also wrote the book “Tell No One” (Tylko nie mów nikomu), expanding on the subject explored in his acclaimed documentary.
