The Cult Film Wielka majówka to Kick Off the May Weekend in Grudziądz

The film Wielka majówka, directed by Krzysztof Rogulski, is today considered one of the most interesting works of Polish cinema from the early 1980s. Blending elements of a road movie, social drama, and bitter satire, it portrays the reality of the final years of the communist era in Poland from the perspective of young people dreaming of freedom and a better life. One of the two leading roles—alongside Jan Piechociński—marked the debut of Zbigniew Zamachowski, a recipient of the Golden Angel award at the Tofifest International Film Festival in Toruń.

The main characters, Rysiek and Julek, are two young men who meet by chance during the May weekend. Together, they set off on a journey across Poland, escaping everyday life, unfulfilled ambitions, and the dull reality surrounding them. Their journey becomes a pretext for portraying social contrasts and the atmosphere of the time. While filled with ironic humor, the film also offers a deeper reflection on loneliness, frustration, and the desire for freedom.

One of the film’s greatest strengths lies in its performances. The cast includes Jan Jankowski and Zbigniew Buczkowski, who created a memorable on-screen duo. Music also plays an important role, with songs by the band Maanam enhancing the atmosphere of youthful rebellion and uncertainty of the early 1980s. The soundtrack was composed by Marek Jackowski, with vocals performed by Kora in five songs, including Moja miłość jest szalona, Stoję, czuję się świetnie, and Ta noc do innych jest niepodobna.

Over the years, the film has achieved cult status. Today, Wielka majówka is appreciated for its authentic portrayal of Poland at the time and its skillful blend of comedy with a sharp social commentary.

The film will be screened as part of the Year of Film People 2026 on April 28 at 6:00 PM at the Theatre in Grudziądz.

Zbigniew Zamachowski was also one of the key figures of the 22nd Tofifest International Film Festival in 2024, where he received the prestigious Golden Angel award for creative defiance and served as a juror in both the main competition and the “On Air” section. This year’s 24th edition of the festival will take place from June 27 to July 3.
