Film Region Kujawsko-Pomorskie: New Open-Air Cinema in Bydgoszcz

Cinema under the stars, a unique riverside location on the Brda River, and a film deeply connected to the city’s history – this is how a new series of open-air film screenings will begin in Bydgoszcz. Lemara Barge, the Municipal Cultural Centre in Bydgoszcz, and the TeH2O Water, Industry and Craft Trail invite residents to the first event in the new “Bydgoszcz Film Enchantment” programme.

The inaugural screening will take place on Friday, 19 June 2026, at 9:30 p.m. at Rybi Rynek. Admission is free. Organisers describe it as the first in a series of screenings featuring productions connected with Bydgoszcz. The programme forms part of celebrations marking the 680th anniversary of the city receiving municipal rights and aims to highlight both its history and its contemporary film-making potential.

The opening film will be Fyrtel 39, an independent production created by a Bydgoszcz-based group of enthusiasts led by Paweł Thomas, also known as the rapper Pafarazzi. For years, the creators have demonstrated that ambitious cinema can be produced outside major film studios. Their previous productions, published on the “Lewizna” YouTube channel, have achieved remarkable popularity online. The first instalment attracted nearly one million viewers, while the sequel drew almost two million. The group’s portfolio also includes the series The Strzyga from Our Class and the horror film Gusła.

Fyrtel 39 is set in Bydgoszcz on the eve of the Second World War and during the first days of September 1939. The main character, Edward Suski, a young thief from Lviv, arrives in the city hoping to carry out an easy heist. Instead of a quick profit, however, he finds himself caught up in the dramatic events surrounding Germany’s invasion of Poland.

The filmmakers emphasise that the production is not a historical reconstruction but rather an original artistic interpretation set against the backdrop of those turbulent days. Nevertheless, it contains references to authentic events that took place in Bydgoszcz at the outbreak of the war, including the tragic experiences of the city’s residents. Filming locations included Fordon, the Old Market Square, and the historic Hotel Pod Orłem, making Bydgoszcz not only the setting but also one of the story’s principal characters.

The film was produced in just nine shooting days with a budget of PLN 25,000. The lead role was played by Daniel Roman. The production stands as an example of the passion and determination of local filmmakers who succeeded in creating a feature-length historical drama despite limited resources.

The screening of Fyrtel 39 will launch a new chapter of film events along the Brda River. Organisers hope the open-air cinema at Rybi Rynek will become a regular meeting place where residents can engage with history, culture and cinema, while also rediscovering Bydgoszcz through the lens of film.

During the summer, the Municipal Cultural Centre in Bydgoszcz will also host open-air screenings in its car park. Admission to all screenings is free.
