Film Fund: Filming Wraps on “Self-Immolation”

The Documentary and Feature Film Studios (WFDiF) has announced the completion of principal photography for “Self-Immolation”, directed by Krzysztof Zanussi. The final day of shooting for WFDiF’s latest production took place at a film studio in Bulgaria, bringing the filming stage of the project to a close.

The last day on set was held at Nu Boyana Film Studios, one of Europe’s largest film studios. Earlier, filming had taken place in Warsaw and Toruń, among other locations.

The 86-year-old director, an icon of Poland’s Cinema of Moral Anxiety movement, shot outdoor scenes in Toruń for a film that many in the industry describe as his farewell to cinema. Production on “Self-Immolation” began on 18 May. The film crew could be seen in central Toruń, at the airport where balloon scenes were filmed, and in the municipality of Zławieś Wielka.

Details of the screenplay remain under wraps, but it is known that Zanussi continues to pursue the artistic themes that have defined his work for decades. “Self-Immolation” is expected to be a drama exploring questions of spirituality, divine intervention, and the limits of human agency.

The cast includes Ksawery Szlenkier, Karolina Kominek, Mateusz Rusin, Marcin Hycnar, Bartłomiej Kotschedoff, Jacek Koman, Michał Czarnik, Mateusz Więcławek, and Maria Mamona.

The film is co-financed by the Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund.
