You are invited to participate in the contest “They Shaped Our History.”
Students of grades VI, VII and VIII of primary schools, as well as students of general secondary schools, technical schools and vocational schools in our region, are invited to participate in the competition “They Created Our History.” We are waiting for written works addressing topics related to contemporary history until March 17.
“Participation in the competition is an excellent opportunity to develop historical knowledge about our region and to record local history based on the memories of witnesses, as well as photographs and keepsakes preserved in family and public archives,” encourages Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
We are waiting for individually prepared, previously unpublished written works, supervised by a teacher, devoted to one of the following topics:
- About people
- About events
- Family album
- Faces of everyday life
- The participation and role of residents of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region in contemporary events
- Assistance provided to Jews by Poles during the German occupation in World War II
- My school and my school’s teachers
Submitted works will be evaluated in two age categories: students of grades VI, VII and VIII of primary schools and students of general secondary schools, technical schools and vocational schools.
For the winners in both categories, we have prepared attractive prizes: 1st place – prize worth PLN 2,000, 2nd place – PLN 1,600 and 3rd place – PLN 1,200. Prizes will also be awarded to the teachers supervising the authors of the winning works.

The competition is organized by Self-Government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, Brig. Gen. Prof. Elżbieta Zawacka Pedagogical Library in Toruń, Education Superintendent’s Office in Bydgoszcz, General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation, Pomeranian Home Army Archive and Museum and Polish Women’s Military Service in Toruń.
The patron of the competition is Elżbieta Zawacka – an outstanding andragogue, social activist and general of the Polish Army; during World War II a soldier of the Home Army, a participant in the Warsaw Uprising, an emissary of the Commander-in-Chief of the Union of Armed Struggle to the Polish government-in-exile in London, the only woman among the “Silent Unseen” (Cichociemni), and after the war a prisoner of the Stalinist regime.
