World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26: 50 relays for 50 days to go before the athletics celebration

In exactly fifty days, the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26 will begin at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena Toruń. “We will spend this time in an active way, because every day in a different part of our region there will be unique events engaging all residents of Kujawsko-Pomorskie,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki. The event has also gained another ambassador — pole vaulter Paweł Wojciechowski.

From 20 to 22 March, the world’s best athletes will compete for medals in the most important indoor athletics event of the year at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena Toruń. It will be a true gathering of stars from around the globe, with Polish representatives also taking part. “I am convinced that our athletes will prepare excellently for the competition and show, in front of the home crowd, that they are able to compete with the best in the world,” emphasises Championship Director and Vice President of the Polish Athletics Association, Krzysztof Wolsztyński.

The upcoming Indoor World Championships will be felt throughout the entire region, as sports events will be held every day in all counties of the region until the championships begin. Notably, teams will be formed by various groups, including children, firefighters, members of hobby clubs, and sports clubs. During Thursday’s press conference in Toruń, children from Sadki near Nakło were present, marking the launch of the initiative. “The upcoming championships are a great opportunity to promote an active lifestyle,” stressed Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “As early as tomorrow, at the primary school in Sadki, we will inaugurate our ‘50 Relays of Kujawy and Pomorze’ programme, under which for 50 days, every day in a different municipality, a variety of sports and community-building activities will take place, addressed to everyone — children, young people, adults, and entire families. We also want the coming days to be associated with building a sense of community and the joy of jointly experiencing the approaching sports celebration. Together, we are creating these championships!”

Another outstanding Polish athlete has joined the group of championship ambassadors — like Adrianna Sułek-Schubert, he is closely connected with the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region. From now on, alongside Sułek-Schubert and Piotr Lisek, Paweł Wojciechowski will promote the championships. The 36-year-old pole vaulter has won, among other achievements, the world championship title (2011), a bronze medal at the world championships (2015), the European vice-championship (2014), and the European indoor championship title (2019). Wojciechowski was born in Bydgoszcz and has been connected with the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region throughout his career.

“I am very proud that I can contribute to the promotion and organisation of the Indoor World Championships in my region. For Kujawsko-Pomorskie, this is undoubtedly a unique moment, because although we have hosted many major athletics events, such as the European Indoor Championships or outstanding meetings like the ORLEN Copernicus Cup — where Armand Duplantis broke his first world record — we have never before hosted an event of the rank of the Indoor World Championships,” emphasises Wojciechowski.

Ticket sales for the March championships are still ongoing, but only a very limited number of tickets remain available. “There are sessions that are already sold out, but it is still possible to secure a chance to take part in this sporting celebration,” adds Wolsztyński. In total, just under three thousand tickets were made available for each of the six competition sessions. Tickets can be purchased via the eBilet.pl platform. The arena has been divided into three price categories, with the cheapest tickets priced at PLN 100.

The competitions at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena Toruń will begin on 20 March. Morning sessions will start each day at 10:05 a.m., while afternoon sessions will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday. The first medals — in the women’s high jump — will be awarded during the opening session of the championships.

The countdown of one hundred days to the championships began with the ringing of the Tuba Dei bell. The bell was rung by sprinter Marika Popowicz-Drapała, pole vaulter Paweł Wojciechowski, and championship ambassadors — combined events athlete Adrianna Sułek-Schubert and pole vaulter Piotr Lisek. They were accompanied on the tower of the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. John by long jumper Anna Matuszewicz and high jumpers Mateusz Kołodziejski and Mikołaj Szczęsny.
