WIC Kujawy Pomorze 26: Discover the History of Athletics
Medals, uniforms, shoes, and equipment used by the greatest stars of athletics can be viewed until the end of the week (March 22) at the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) located on the ground floor of the Toruń Plaza shopping center. On Saturday (March 21), the exhibition will be expanded with new items donated by Marshal Piotr Całbecki and Polish athletes: Sebastian Chmara, Adam Kszczot, and Paweł Wojciechowski.
“Athletics – the queen of sports – has always inspired people. It teaches courage, perseverance, and pushing beyond limits. It is a great honor for us to host the world’s best athletes, who will compete here for medals and new records,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The head of the region will donate the official championship mascot and a relay baton to the Museum of World Athletics. As part of the “50 Relays of Kujawy and Pomorze,” the baton has been visiting towns across the region, promoting physical activity ahead of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26.
Marshal Piotr Całbecki will also receive the World Athletics Heritage Plaque, awarded for contributions to the development of athletics. The ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) in Toruń Plaza.
The event at the Toruń shopping centre will also be attended by Dutch sprinter Nelli Cooman and middle-distance runners Daniel Komen of Kenya and Noureddine Morceli of Algeria.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until Sunday (March 22).
Among the MOWA exhibits are, among others, the spikes of Marcus O’Sullivan, the 1987 world champion in the 1,500 meters, and the uniform worn by Devynne Charlton when she won the 2024 world indoor title and set a world record in the 60 m hurdles in Glasgow. Visitors can also see the spikes of the legendary Irena Szewińska, one of the greatest figures in the history of world sprinting, and the shoes of Robert Korzeniowski, a four-time Olympic champion in race walking.
Visitors will also find interactive installations, including 1:1 scale visualization of world records in the high jump and pole vault, as well as a shot-put area.
