We Hosted Poles from Brazil

Marshal Piotr Całbecki met today (December 27) with a small group of Brazilians of Polish descent who continue to preserve Polish national traditions across the ocean. Grupo Folclórico Polonês (Polish Folklore Group) Mazury has been active for 30 years in Mallet, in the Brazilian state of Paraná, which is the largest Polish community center in Brazil.

Our guests, descendants of Poles who arrived in Brazil at the end of the 19th century, performed in traditional Polish folk costumes. The meeting included fascinating stories about their family histories, traditional Polish folk dances, and the joint singing of carols. The group was accompanied by Sławomir Doliński, president of the Inowrocław-based Friends of Budowlanka Society, who is hosting the Brazilian Poles.

Grupo Mazury collaborates with several Polish institutions in the country, including the Friends of Budowlanka Society in Inowrocław, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and the National Institute of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad Polonika. One outcome of this cooperation is a project to inventory and conserve Polish cemeteries in Brazil.

The Polish minority in Brazil is estimated to number between 1.5 and 3 million people.
