We donate blood on Thursday

The summer holidays are a time when regular donors donate fewer blood, and hospitals’ demand for this valuable medicine increases. On Thursday (August 21st), a special ambulance from the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center in Bydgoszcz, where people can donate blood, will be stationed at Teatralny Square in front of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń. The campaign is repeated every third Thursday of the month.

Your blood can save the health or life of another person. I appeal to everyone who can do so to participate in our campaign,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who can donate?

Blood can be donated by healthy adults up to 65 years of age, who are not showing any symptoms of infection, and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Those wishing to donate should bring a photo ID confirming their identity and a PESEL number. Before donating blood, you should drink approximately 2 liters of fluids (mineral water, juices) daily, be well-rested, eat a light meal, eliminate animal fats from your diet if possible, limit smoking, and avoid alcohol (including the day before donation).

Blood donation is safe – only disposable equipment is used, so there is no risk of infection with blood-borne viruses. Your visit to the blood donation center begins with completing a questionnaire and registration, as well as collecting a blood sample and undergoing a medical examination. The donation itself takes approximately 5-10 minutes (usually one unit of whole blood, or 450 ml, is collected), followed by a 15-minute rest, after which the donor receives a caloric equivalent (chocolate and juice). More information can be found on the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center website.

The Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center ambulance will be parked in the square in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, August 21st. The service will be available from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

In 2025, blood drives will also be held in the square in front of the Marshal’s Office:

  • September 18
  • October 16
  • November 20
  • December 18

According to the Statistical Office in Bydgoszcz, there are over 33,000 voluntary blood donors in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship – nearly 2 percent of the region’s population.
