Vehicles, Boats, Drones – The Regional Self-Government Supports Volunteer Firefighters

Firefighting and rescue vehicles, light operational vehicles, personnel carriers, and rescue boats were handed over on Friday (18 July) in Toruń to volunteer firefighters from 26 Volunteer Fire Departments (OSP) across the region. The purchases, made in response to the needs and expectations of these units, are part of a project worth 43 million PLN, financed under our regional programme. The total value of the vehicles and equipment just handed over exceeds 7 million PLN.

The procurement list under the Safe Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region project, coordinated by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie branch of the Volunteer Fire Department Association, includes 129 items intended for 107 fire units across the region. It was developed following local consultations held in counties and municipalities. On Friday, firefighters received 16 vehicles and 10 boats.

“Consistent support for rescue services has been part of the regional self-government’s policy for many years. As a result, equipment levels among our region’s units are now very high. We have established effective mechanisms for this kind of support, which is why we are confident that these purchases are thoughtful and necessary. In recent years, we’ve helped fund over one hundred fire trucks. Every third OSP unit now has a new vehicle, and the average age of our fleet is just eight years.

On top of that, we also co-finance the renovation, equipping, and construction of fire stations—often combined with village community centres. This shows the full scale of the region’s involvement in public safety. We see this as our duty—a mission to ensure the safety of our residents. I’m proud that, with EU funding, we can carry it out so effectively,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki before the handover ceremony held in front of the Marshal’s Office.

Among the guests at the event were MP Zbigniew Sosnowski, Chairwoman of the Regional Assembly Elżbieta Piniewska, Deputy Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska, Board Member Dariusz Kurzawa, Deputy Voivode Piotr Hemmerling, Regional Parliament Councilor Paweł Zgórzyński, local government representatives, Regional Chief of the National Fire Service, Officer Senior Brig. Rafał Świechowicz, and Executive Director of the OSP Association’s regional branch, Piotr Tomaszewski.

All purchases under the “Safe Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region” project include:

29 firefighting and rescue vehicles
3 operational vehicles
11 special vehicles for personnel transport
6 multipurpose vehicles
10 rescue boats
17 specialized trailers
12 sets of hydraulic rescue tools
23 sets of electric hydraulic rescue tools
12 fire pumps
6 operational drones

The project is financed by the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze (FEdKP 2021–2027) as well as municipal budgets and the State Fire Service.

Under the current FEdKP financial framework, 100 million PLN has been allocated for support to OSP units. Two funding competitions for OSP facility investment projects are currently active, with 31 million PLN up for grabs.
