UKW Celebrates

The Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz is celebrating its official holiday. On Thursday, April 24, a ceremonial session of the university senate was held in the Collegium Copernicanum hall. The regional self-government was represented by Zbigniew Ostrowski, Vice-Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

“Let the capital of Kazimierz Wielki University be, in the future, the development of a brand as an entrepreneurial university, a regional center of interdisciplinary, modern scientific thought, pursued to support the innovative and competitive economy of Bydgoszcz, the region, and the country. Let the university’s recognition grow through scientific research and the ability to apply its results, and let it build its reputation by meeting students’ expectations through high-quality education in attractive fields and specializations. I’m glad the university is strengthening cooperation not only with other regional academic institutions but also with the regional self-government,” said Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski.

This year, the University’s holiday coincides with the 692nd anniversary of King Casimir the Great’s coronation. The senate session was opened by Rector Professor Bernard Mendlik. The event was also an opportunity to present awards, medals, and distinctions, and to congratulate staff members who had achieved academic promotions. The musical setting for the ceremony was provided by the Kazimierz Wielki University Academic Choir.

As part of the UKW celebrations, a concert was held in the evening at the Copernicanum Concert Hall featuring musicians from Catalonia. The duo included Lionel Berbain (piano) and Frédéric Guisset (Catalan traditional instruments). The festivities concluded with the laying of flowers at the monument of the university’s patron.

The Bydgoszcz University was established in 2005, resulting from the transformation and development of the Kazimierz Wielki Academy of Bydgoszcz, which was based on the legacy and assets of the Higher School of Pedagogy (formerly the Higher Teachers’ School). Today, Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz is a rapidly developing institution, the largest in the city and the second largest in the region.

Funds from the Marshal’s Office, under the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Operational Program 2007–2013, enabled the construction of the UKW Main Library building and the implementation of two stages of the University Center for Physical Education and Sports. In the 2014–2020 EU funding perspective, the university, in cooperation with other regional research centers, secured support for research and development projects.
