Toruń North railway station will regain its luster
A railway museum will be set up in the more than 100-year-old building of Toruń’s railway station. Cleaning work is currently underway in the historic building taken over by the regional government and in the area around it.
– It is important for us to restore the station building and create a place dedicated to the railways. Interest in this project is very high. I would like to thank railway enthusiasts who are already contacting us with ideas for developing this space,’ says Marshal Piotr Całbecki. – We want you to co-create this place with us, which is why I encourage those who have railway memorabilia – tickets, photos, documents – to come forward and hand over these historically valuable items for appropriate display.
The area around the property has been fenced off and cleaning and decluttering is underway. A temporary door has also been installed. In the coming months, structural measurements and surveys will be carried out, as well as the first conservation work. An assessment of the building’s technical condition will allow us to plan its revitalisation and adaptation to its new exhibition and museum function.
In addition, we are planning to have a historical depot with a locomotive, owned by the regional government, which is currently located at the Central Station, placed on the siding.
Residents who have items related to railway history and want them to see the light of day are invited to contact us at muzeumkolejnictwa@kujawsko-pomorskie.pl.
Toruń North Station was opened in 1910 with the opening of the railway line to Czarnowo, used mainly for transporting timber from the forests near Toruń and serving the Timber Port. After two years, the line to Chełmno (via Unisław) was extended and seasonal trains to Barbarka also stopped at the station. The last passenger train left here in 1992.
