Toruń and the regional self-government reach a preliminary agreement on the construction of a new headquarters for the Czochralski Centre
Marshal Piotr Całbecki and the Mayor of Toruń, Paweł Gulewski, signed a letter of intent today (17 April), marking the first step toward the development of a complex of buildings for the future laboratories of the Jan Czochralski Kujawsko-Pomorskie Science and Technology Centre. The city administration and the regional authorities plan for it to become part of a future technology park in the western part of the city.
Both Marshal Piotr Całbecki and Mayor Paweł Gulewski declared their intention for the new complex to be built near the main campus of Nicolaus Copernicus University at 64 – 72 Szosa Okrężna. The 1.5-hectare plot belongs to the city and, according to the plan, would be transferred free of charge (as a donation) to the regional self-government, subject to approval by the City Council.
“This is a very important day and a very important document. I would like to thank the Mayor for the declaration it contains. It is not often that municipal authorities make such an extraordinary commitment – to allocate a highly attractive area, in terms of development potential, for the growth of an institution that is not owned by the city but is inherently aligned with its development strategy. Where, if not in Toruń – the city of Copernicus – should the highest-level technologies, based on cutting-edge research, be developed? Today is a day of celebration, as we can announce another stage in the development of the Czochralski Centre,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki before signing the document.
“Since the beginning of this term, as the new administration of Toruń, we have been doing everything to make the city a Copernicus hub of creativity, where the scientific legacy of Copernicus meets modern technologies and innovative approaches to science, research commercialisation, and business,” emphasised Mayor Paweł Gulewski.
“The idea that guides us is modern research aimed at improving quality of life. We focus primarily on the natural environment, food – functional and processed food, as well as the management of food waste – and health. Of course, without modern chemistry, biochemistry, and biology, such a project would not be possible,” said Professor Bogusław Buszewski, President of the Centre, when asked to briefly describe its activities.
The planned laboratory, office, and educational complex will cover approximately 6,000 square metres and will integrate research and implementation activities in the fields of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and medicine. Future plans include the establishment of a tissue and stem cell bank, dietary supplement laboratories, and a quantum laboratory.
The letter of intent signed today enables the regional government to begin work on the documentation for the planned investment, which will be financed with European Union funds. The ceremony was also attended by Jarosław Wierski, President of the regional special-purpose company Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Investments, and Olgierd Sobkowiak, Director of the Public Procurement Department at the Marshal’s Office.
