This Is How the Energy Mill Is Being Created

The Energy Mill – a new cultural institution in Grudziądz, which will be located in the currently revitalized Upper Mill (Młyn Górny) – is a joint initiative of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional self-government and the Grudziądz city authorities. Intensive construction, renovation, and adaptation work is ongoing, alongside the development of the future institution’s programming concept.

Construction crews are currently working across nearly the entire facility, with the project scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2026. All unnecessary interior structures have already been dismantled. Masonry and reinforcement work is underway, as well as conservation-supervised cleaning of the brick façade and preparation of the foundation slab for the future new wing. During the cleaning of the Trynka Canal, which flows beneath the historic building, a water turbine dating back to the early 20th century – once used for electricity generation – was discovered. It will be extracted, restored, and later displayed in the Energy Mill.

The programming concept for the future Center for Culture and Education – Energy Mill is being developed by Warsaw-based firm Pattern Recognition, known for projects such as the Polish Pavilion at Expo 2017 in Kazakhstan and an exhibition at the Beskid Skiing Center in Wisła.

The Energy Mill in Grudziądz, a new cultural institution operated by the regional self-government, is being developed at a cost of PLN 76 million (funded in part by the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze regional program) in a former grain mill located in the city center. The existing structure consists of three segments – six, five, and four stories high. After completion, the facility will include seven large rooms (for exhibitions, workshops, and conferences), an auditorium with 170 seats, and a café with a mezzanine. The newly built wing will house a smaller conference room and office spaces.

The mission of the center will be to present and promote the cultural heritage and history of the city and region, as well as to popularize knowledge in the fields of science, nature, technology, and the humanities.
