International Theatre Day was established in June 1961 during the 9th World Congress of the International Theatre Institute in Helsinki. The celebration is held annually on March 27, marking the anniversary of the opening of the Theatre of Nations in Paris.

Each year, the International Theatre Institute honors outstanding creators of global theatre and invites them to share a personal message for the occasion. This year’s message was written by Willem Dafoe, a four-time Oscar-nominated actor, theatre artist, artistic director of the theatre section of La Biennale di Venezia, and co-founder of The Wooster Group based at The Performing Garage.

Much like the slogan in a casino: ‘To win, you have to be present.’ The strength of theatre undoubtedly lies in the shared, live participation in the act of creation, which—although prepared and rehearsed—unfolds differently each time. Socially and politically, theatre has never been more vital, more necessary to understand ourselves and the world around us,” reads the message.

The message for the Polish Centre of the International Theatre Institute was written by Marcin Wierzchowski, theatre director and academic lecturer.
