The manor complex in Brąchnówko – a future cultural center promoting regional identity
The regional government will take over the palace and park complex in Brąchnówko, in Toruń County, to establish a museum and cultural Civic Activity Center promoting the cultural, economic, and social achievements of our region. A letter of intent to this effect was signed today (April 7) by Marshal Piotr Całbecki and the Mayor of the Chełmża municipality, Bartosz Szprenglewski.
The project concerns a mid-19th-century manor house belonging to the Czarliński family—Polish patriots, agricultural entrepreneurs, and social activists—along with the surrounding green complex. The eclectic building (with classical elements) was rebuilt in the early 20th century. The manor was known for its rich library, frequented and used by, among others, historian and long-time director of the Ossolineum, Wojciech Kętrzyński. During World War II, the property was taken over by occupying forces, and after the war it housed, among other things, a primary school.
For us, however, Brąchnówko is primarily associated with Stefan Łaszewski, the first Voivode of Pomerania, who was born on January 8, 1862, most likely in a wooden manor that then belonged to his father, Julian Łaszewski. That building was later replaced by the current structure covered by today’s letter of intent. Stefan Łaszewski—voivode of the pre-war large Pomorskie Region with its capital in Toruń, later President of the Supreme Administrative Tribunal, and a social activist and patriot connected to our region—is an ideal patron for the future Civic Activity Center, a place of social integration promoting our regional achievements in culture, economy, and civil society.
The Chełmża municipality is transferring the Brąchnówko complex to the regional government free of charge. It has also undertaken to provide new premises for individuals and institutions currently occupying rooms in the palace and its associated buildings.
Among those attending today’s signing ceremony were also Vice-President of the Regional Parliament Katarzyna Lubańska, Toruń County Head Mirosław Graczyk, and Director of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Heritage Center Dr. Marek Rubnikowicz.
