Summer Nights with the Perseids – Astrobases Invite You!

Summer nights are lit up by shooting stars. The Kujawsko-Pomorskie network of Astrobaz Kopernik invites you to join in observing the Perseids – a unique meteor shower that attracts lovers of the night sky every year. Until 24 August, astronomical picnics will be held at the astrobases, during which we will watch this extraordinary spectacle together.

For years, we have been combining modern forms of popularising science with the rich astronomical traditions of our region. I wish you fruitful observations!’ says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

This year’s series of astronomical picnics, ‘Observing the Perseids’, began on 8 August in Zławieś Wielka. The next day, meetings were held in Rypin and Gostycyn, on 11 August in Brodnica, Inowrocław and Świecie, on 12 August in Unisław and Kruszwica, and on 13 August in Radziejów and Jabłonowo Pomorskie. Further meetings are planned at our astro-bases until 24 August. Participants can look forward not only to unforgettable views of the night sky, but also to meetings with astronomy enthusiasts and the opportunity to observe planets, the Moon and constellations through professional telescopes.

The most spectacular nights of the Perseids are from 11 to 14 August – that is when you can see up to several dozen meteors per hour.

Schedule of picnics at astro bases:

  • Żnin – 14 August, 9:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
  • Dobrzyń nad Wisłą – 14 August, 7:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m.
  • Gniewkowo – 24 August, 8:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.

The events are organised by the Marshal’s Centre for Astronomical Education (which is a unit of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centre for Education and Innovation) in cooperation with local entities.

Copernicus Astrobases – over 15 years under the stars

The Copernicus Astrobase network consists of thirteen observatories where classes are conducted by teachers, astronomy enthusiasts and professional astronomers. It has been operating for over fifteen years. In March this year, the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Education Centre, which coordinates its activities, signed an agreement with the Polish Astronomical Society, which strengthens the competences of the animators of the facilities and enables participation in international projects. The regional government has recently allocated PLN 1.5 million for the maintenance of the observatories’ infrastructure.

More information, news and contact details for coordinators can be found on the website of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centre for Education and Innovation in Toruń.
