Safety as a priority. The first detectors for seniors in need in Chełmno
Marshal Piotr Całbecki distributed today (26 February) the first batch of carbon monoxide detectors purchased by the regional self-government. The devices were given to senior residents of Chełmno who are beneficiaries of the local day care centre.
“It is hard to believe how many homes are still not equipped with such devices. The risk is not limited to the heating season—gas water heaters operate all year round. We must do everything possible to ensure that the tragedy that recently occurred in Chełmno never happens again,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki. During today’s visit to the Chełmno day care centre, he was accompanied by the Vice-President of the Regional Parliament, Katarzyna Lubańska, and Regional Councillor Jacek Gajewski.
Further detectors will be distributed to those in need soon. Ultimately, as part of a project financed with EU funds, the regional self-government will purchase several tens of thousands of such devices and provide them free of charge to residents of the region who need them.
The project is long-term in nature. Its goal is not only to respond to the revealed scale of the threat—especially in older buildings and with outdated heating systems—but also to build public awareness and promote good safety practices.
