Robot in the Operating Room: Our Oncology Centre is the Best in the Country
The Marshal’s Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz is the national leader in the use of surgical robots in operative practice. Last year, the hospital performed 838 such procedures: 512 urological (including 468 prostate removals), 190 colorectal cancer surgeries, 78 thoracic surgeries, and 58 gynecological operations.
“I congratulate the surgical teams of the Oncology Centre. Operating such systems is a real challenge, requiring knowledge and skills at the highest global level. It goes without saying that the Oncology Centre is a renowned, top-class oncology facility in Poland and one of the best in Europe,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The report Surgical Robotics 2025, summarizing last year’s data, was prepared by the Modern Healthcare Institute under the patronage of the Patient Ombudsman. It shows that in 2024, more than 17,000 operations were performed in Poland using robotic systems — a 70% increase compared to the previous year! Professor Tomasz Drewa, President of the Polish Urological Association, quoted in the publication, speaks of an “explosion” of surgical robotics as a precise, safe, and minimally invasive technique. Prof. Drewa, head of the Department of General and Oncological Urology at the Jurasz University Hospital in Bydgoszcz and a surgeon with an impressive record of robotic operations (309 last year, the second-best result in the country), stresses that Poland is now catching up on two decades of backlog in this field.
The Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz is the only facility in Poland with three robotic surgical systems. The Robotic Surgery Center — a new operating suite equipped with three such machines — was opened in November 2024.
Robotic-assisted surgeries are also performed by surgeons, urologists, gynecologists, and thoracic surgeons in hospitals in Toruń, Grudziądz, and Włocławek, as well as in university clinics in Bydgoszcz. The rate of 99 robotic surgeries per 100,000 inhabitants places us among the national leaders.
