Reactivation of railway connections to Rypin and Wierzchucin

At least six pairs of trains per year will start running on two railway routes – from Brodnica to Rypin and from Laskowice Pomorskie to Wierzchucin. The regional government, which organises passenger rail transport in the region, will soon select a carrier to operate these routes. Passengers will travel on modern trains. They will also benefit from the new railway infrastructure in Brodnica and Rypin, modernised by PKP Polish Railway Lines (PLK).

We are consistently restoring regional rail connections. We know that our efforts, decisions and work on restoring connections are well received by residents and travellers. And Ciechocinek will not be the only destination that can be reached by rail again. Regional passenger trains will return to Rypin after a 25-year break. I am glad that passengers travelling to Wierzchucin will also be able to take advantage of our offer,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki. –

Two offers

The regional government has announced two tenders for regional passenger rail transport, which will be operated on lines 33 (Brodnica – Rypin) and 208 (Laskowice Pomorskie – Wierzchucin). Two potential contractors, Arriva RP and the Czech company Leo Express, have submitted price proposals for each tender. The bids are currently being analysed.

Brodnica – Rypin (with the possibility of extension to Grudziądz and Toruń):

  • Arriva RP sp. z o.o. – PLN 28.11/km,
  • Leo Express – PLN 45.83/km

Laskowice Pomorskie – Wierzchucin (with the possibility of extension to Grudziądz and Chojnice):

  • Arriva RP sp. z o.o. – PLN 31.41/km,
  • Leo Express – PLN 49.61/km.

The contractors selected in the tender will have over a year to prepare for the implementation of the tasks.

One golden ticket

The trains will start running in December 2026 and will operate until 2030. During this period, 6 to 12 pairs of trains per day will run on the Brodnica – Rypin section, and 6 to 8 pairs on the Laskowice Pomorskie – Wierzchucin section.

The connections will be operated by traction units, rail buses and trailer carriages equipped with air conditioning, toilets adapted to the needs of people with disabilities and space for transporting at least four bicycles. The trains will not be more than twenty years old.

During the first month of service (from 13 December 2026 to 17 January 2027), passengers will pay one zloty for a ticket on both sections. For passengers over 65 years of age, tickets will cost only PLN 4 for the entire duration of the contracts (until 2030).

New infrastructure

In parallel with the tenders, PKP PLK is carrying out modernisation works on the railway infrastructure. The renovation was preceded by negotiations between the regional government and the railway company, which resulted in an investment that will enable passenger transport to be carried out safely and at an appropriate speed.

The railway station in Rypin is being modernised. A new platform will be built from scratch and the existing one will be modernised. The tracks are also planned to be rebuilt. This will allow passenger trains to travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour. Construction work will start in the second half of the year.

In Brodnica, in the vicinity of the railway crossing on 18 Stycznia Street, a new railway stop, Brodnica Południowa, will be built with facilities for people with disabilities and equipped with shelters, information display cases, benches, signage and LED lighting. The work will be completed in the summer of 2026.

From December to Ciechocinek

After 14 years, rail connections from Aleksandrów Kujawski to Ciechocinek will return in December this year.

The regional government, which organises passenger rail transport in the region, will allocate PLN 237 million in subsidies for this purpose this year. This amount includes compensation costs for Arriva and Polregio, as well as costs of access to railway infrastructure and station fees – PLN 31.3 million. We also own three-quarters of the trains (37 trainsets) serving passenger connections in our region.
