Rapid diagnosis is the key to effective treatment

The diagnostic segment of the Bydgoszcz Regional Children’s Hospital (RCH) will be enriched with a state-of-the-art Organ Diagnostics Centre with two MRI and cytometry labs, as well as endoscopy and ultrasound rooms. Today (27 February), the tender was awarded. The contractor for the investment is ulti-trade company Ebud – Przemysłówka from Bydgoszcz.

This investment is another step in the development of the facility, which has been one of the best clinics of its kind in the country for years. We are not resting on our laurels; we are investing to maintain the current high level of diagnostics and treatment. In medicine, there are no finished projects. Hospitals, especially the most important ones in the region, must be constantly modernised, which means buying the latest generation of equipment and medical apparatus, as well as extending hospital complexes – emphasises Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The investment will modernise the hospital’s diagnostic facilities and secure the imaging diagnostic needs of patients diagnosed and treated in our hospital, but also transferred from other medical facilities in the region – emphasises Edward Hartwich, Director of the Brudziński Regional Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz. – We also anticipate patients from other regions of Poland – especially those using the services of surgical wards, which perform highly specialised, interdisciplinary procedures, also in cooperation with specialists from other countries (e.g. operations on tumours of the central nervous system, treatment of hearing loss).

The Organ Diagnostic Centre will improve patients’ accessibility to specialised tests for early diagnosis of disease. A short diagnostic pathway is of particular importance for children, as diseases in this age population develop much more dynamically than in adult patients,’ points out Danuta Kurylak, MD, PhD, Deputy Director for Medical Affairs at the Brudziński Regional Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz.

The investment includes the construction of a three-storey new building (3,500 square metres of usable floor space) to house state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratories (two MRI scanning laboratories, a cytometry and endoscopy laboratory and an ultrasound laboratory relocated from the existing building), as well as a two-level underground car park with 93 spaces. The cost of the construction and equipment is PLN 60 million. Funding is based on our regional programme European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie 2021-2027 and the hospital’s own contribution. Construction work will take 18 months.

We will be carrying out the investment in the city centre, on the site of a permanently operating hospital, which will pose some difficulties, but the company selected in the tender procedure has experience in carrying out this type of project and I am convinced that the investment will proceed without problems,’ says the president of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Medical Investments company, Jarosław Wierski.

The complex of the Regional Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz was built practically from scratch and commissioned in 2015. Its construction and the first purchases of medical equipment were one of the largest investments of this kind in the country. It is also the most spectacular undertaking of the first part of our medical package of the century, i.e. the Marshal’s programme to modernise the province’s most important medical facilities.

The RCH has been among the best hospitals in the country for years, moreover it is one of the few Polish centres that specialises in the surgical and oncological treatment of hard-to-treat tumours of the head and neck, especially tumours of the skull base. An interdisciplinary team including a specialist in paediatric oncology and haematology, a neurosurgeon, a maxillofacial surgeon and a paediatric otolaryngologist take on extremely complex challenges, and many years of multi-specialist cooperation mean that the most complicated cases are also brought here from other regions. In 2020, the otolaryngology-neurosurgery team successfully undertook the first operation in Central and Eastern Europe to place an auditory implant in the brainstem. Specialist skull base procedures are performed at our Regional Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz on a regular basis. In 2023, a team of RCH specialists performed an extremely complex operation to remove an extensive skull base tumour in an eight-year-old boy.

Bydgoszcz is currently the largest construction site, which is possible thanks to funds managed by the regional government. Among the most important investments under way are the construction of the fourth circle of Opera Nova (at a cost of PLN 150 million) and the modernisation and extension of the complex of main buildings of the Oncology Centre, supplemented by purchases of the latest equipment (our contribution of PLN 150 million). We are on the eve of announcing a tender for the extension of the Pomeranian Philharmonic (estimated cost: PLN 300 million). The Voivodeship and City Public Library in Bydgoszcz will also undergo modernisation.
