The expansion of the Regional Mental Health Hospital in Świecie is underway. Located in a historic 19th century complex, the facility will be enriched with a mental health centre and a horticultural therapy centre. The investment is one of the largest in the hospital’s 170-year history. The value of the task exceeds PLN 35 million.

 

The Regional Mental Health Hospital in Świecie is located in a historic 19th-century complex under preservationist care, which makes the consistent modernisation that has been carried out here for years a real challenge. However, we can say with satisfaction that although a lot still lies ahead of us, the effects of our actions are visible and recognized by patients and staff says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

 

The new development will implement the idea of modern community psychiatry. The basis for the facility is the disused or hitherto technically functional pavilions in the centre of the clinic complex. The buildings are currently receiving new roof trusses and coverings, the walls of the stairwells are being brickworked, the contractor is installing the ceilings and carrying out conservation work on the facades. The laying of central heating pipes has also begun, and preparations are being made for the installation of sanitary and electrical installations. A psychiatric day ward and a community care unit will be housed here after a major conversion renovation. A modern and functionally planned space will be created for outpatient clinics, doctors’ surgeries, relaxation and therapy rooms, a dentist’s surgery and an entire wing dedicated to the training of doctors. The project also includes the construction of an internal brine graduation tower. The contractor for the task is Husaria Development from Gdańsk. The value of this part of the investment is PLN 19 million, of which more than PLN 16 million comes from the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze 2021-2027.

 

As part of the same project, extensive modernisation work is being carried out in the building that will serve as administrative and archive facilities – internal walls have been rebuilt, ceilings have been prepared for structural work, and installation and plastering work is underway. Due to the historical nature of the building, care has been taken to preserve the original woodwork and brick façade fragments, which have been restored. The building will be fitted with a lift, modern fire protection systems and new sanitary and electrical installations.

 

In the therapy building, which is used for, among other things, art therapy and horticulture-based occupational therapy, the roof structure has been completed. It will house a gardening workshop, a painting studio, a modern art studio, a winter garden and a seasonal garden. The green spaces, covering almost one hectare, will also be revitalised. The contractor for this part of the investment (worth PLN 16 million, with a grant from the FEdKP of more than PLN 11 million) is the Prof-Bud consortium from Świecie.

 

Other planned investments include the construction of a psychiatric care and treatment facility (at an estimated cost of PLN 23 million), a sports hall with a gym (at a cost of PLN 17 million) and training flats (for PLN 11 million).

 

The hospital’s children’s ward also underwent a complete overhaul. After modernisation, it has become a space friendly to the youngest patients – with relaxation, therapy and music rooms, school facilities, modern equipment and warm décor.

 

The hospital treats patients with mental disorders and addictions. The facility has 480 beds in 16 inpatient treatment wards. There is also an addiction counselling centre, which provides, among other things, psychotherapy (for addicts, co-addicts and the addict’s relatives).

 

The comprehensive modernisation of the hospital, which has been carried out systematically over many years (successively all pavilions, kitchen, hospital networks, administrative and technical buildings, energy modernisation, purchases of equipment and supplies), has been financed with funds from our regional programmes of previous perspectives and our medical centenary package, i.e. the Marshal’s modernisation programme for all provincial hospitals.

 

On the occasion of the facility’s 170th anniversary, a volume of poetry entitled “Polyphonies”, a collection of poems written by patients and hospital staff, was published.
