Przygrywka for the Tenth Time

The jubilee tenth edition of the Przygrywka festival begins today (26 May) at the Od Nowa club in Toruń with the performance “Next to Normal” prepared by the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. The programme includes 15 student productions from 11 artistic schools across Poland. The event, organised by the Kujawsko-Pomorski Music Theatre, is held under the honorary patronage of Marshal Piotr Całbecki. The festival review is co-financed by the regional self-government.

– The festival creates a space in which young performers can present their skills to audiences and the theatre community. Przygrywka is also a place for building first professional connections and artistic impulses which often become the beginning of a stage career for young actors. I congratulate the organisers on the idea behind the festival and wish students from across the country every success – says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

This year’s edition of the festival will be record-breaking. Twenty submissions from universities and artistic schools from across Poland were received for the anniversary edition, with 15 productions selected for the final programme. A total of 220 participants from 11 artistic schools will come to Toruń.

Among the productions presented will be “Buy Now” by the Capitol Musical Study Programme – an ironic and moving story about consumerism, mass production and the traps of apparent success; “Shadows – A Script Straight from the Basement” by the Academy of Music in Gdańsk – a performance leading the audience through areas of fear, memory and inner tensions; “Urban Ballads” by students of the Łódź Film School – inspired by old street songs; and “A Pure Figment” by the Białystok branch of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art – a poetic evening of acting songs built around emotions, memory and stage intimacy.

Festival repertoire

The programme will also include productions based on the works of Stanisław Staszewski, Wojciech Młynarski, Nick Cave, Lech Janerka and Spięty, as well as the bands Maanam, Kult, Lao Che and Happysad.

The jury consists of six members: Janusz Grzywacz, Katarzyna Jamróz, Tomasz Lewandowski, Agnieszka Płoszajska, Jerzy Satanowski and Anna Wołek.

All performances will be presented at the Od Nowa club at 37a Gagarina Street in Toruń. The Przygrywka festival concludes on 30 May.
