Polish Armed Forces Day

The celebrations of Polish Armed Forces Day, held to commemorate the victorious Battle of Warsaw in 1920, are taking place across the region. Today (14 August) in Bydgoszcz, Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski took part in the official roll call. During Friday’s ceremonies (15 August), the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Self-Government will be represented by Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska (in Lipno and Kikół, Lipno County), Regional Executive Board Member Marek Wojtkowski (in Włocławek), and Regional Secretary Marek Smoczyk (in Toruń).

“The Miracle on the Vistula was a victory in defence of truth, in defence of freedom,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “On Polish Armed Forces Day, I bow my head before the soldiers and officers of the Polish Army. May the nation you serve never lack gratitude.”

A mass at the garrison church, an official roll call, and the laying of flowers at the monument of Marshal Józef Piłsudski will be the key points of Friday’s (15 August) Polish Armed Forces Day celebrations in Toruń.

In Włocławek, ceremonies marking the 105th anniversary of the city’s defence against the Red Army will take place at the Monument to the Polish Soldier and the Monument to the Defenders of the Vistula in 1920.

Events organised by local governments in Kikół and Lipno will be held at monuments commemorating those who fought for freedom.

The celebrations are accompanied by picnics, fairs, and military equipment displays.

One hundred and five years ago, Polish soldiers repelled the Red Army advancing westward towards Warsaw. The Battle of Warsaw was a turning point in the Polish–Soviet War, allowing Polish forces to seize the initiative and secure victory.
