A modern silhouette, eye-catching façades, eco-friendly solutions, interiors and ways of providing access to collections straight out of a bibliophile’s dream—the new wing of the Copernican Library in Toruń is now welcoming readers. The official opening ceremony took place today (27 February) with the participation of Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The new wing of the main Copernican Library complex spans four storeys with a mezzanine and offers 1,000 square metres of usable floor space and a total volume of 8,000 cubic metres. The technologies applied—including double glass walls—make the building resistant to both high and low temperatures. In addition to standard library spaces and a multimedia access area, the facility includes a study storage room where the Library displays part of its most valuable collections, a conference hall with mobile seating, and a reading and relaxation zone. The architectural concept was designed by Agnieszka Bojdecka.

Construction and equipment costs exceeded PLN 30 million, while the entire project—including, among other elements, the conservation and digitisation of two items from the Library’s special collections—amounted to a total of PLN 37 million. The funding comes from the government-managed European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021–2027 (FEnIKS) programme and the regional budget.
