Our ambulance will save Ukrainian soldiers

Today (26 August), an ambulance donated by the regional self-government to the Ukrainian foundation ‘Samoobrona’ left the Marshal’s Office for Kopiansk (Kharkiv Oblast). The vehicle, which was previously used by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Pulmonology Centre, will be used to save lives on the front line of the Ukrainian-Russian war after undergoing a thorough renovation.

‘Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, we have stood in solidarity and are doing everything we can to not forget the Ukrainian people. May this symbolic gift serve as a reminder that the war is ongoing and that help is still needed,’ said Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The Marshal also recalled the regional self-government’s support for improving medical infrastructure in Ukraine. Two years ago, we donated an ambulance from Bydgoszcz Regional Ambulance Service, which is currently in service in Pokrovsk (Donetsk Oblast). During this time, it has transported over 600 wounded soldiers to hospitals in various sections of the front line.

Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we have been supporting local and regional communities in that country, as well as Ukrainian war refugees staying in our region. In 2022-2023, we spent PLN 40 million on this cause.

In 63 humanitarian convoys, we sent dressing materials, medicines, sleeping bags, clothing, food and power generators across the eastern border. We donated 20 top-class specialised heat-resistant suits to the Ukrainian rescue services.

People with intellectual disabilities from an evacuated nursing home in Khmelnytskyi found shelter in our province. Currently, 54 people are staying at the care centre on Maria Skłodowska-Curie Street in Toruń.

The ambulance, donated to the Samoobrona Foundation, first went to Warsaw, where it was adapted for frontline service. The vehicle was equipped with a winch, a night-vision camera, a defibrillator and was painted in protective colours.

The vehicle was presented by Andrii Maksimov from the Samooborona Foundation and Mariia Rozik from the Volyn Oblast Council. The foundation has been organising aid for victims of the conflict since 2014. In addition to acquiring ambulances, the foundation helps children orphaned as a result of military operations.
