On Thursday we will donate blood

Despite the progress of medicine, it has not yet been possible to create a substance that would fully replace human blood. On Thursday (Dec. 19), a special ambulance of the Regional Center for Blood Donation and Hemioleting in Bydgoszcz, where you can honorably donate blood, will stand for the last time this year at the Theater Square in front of the Marshal’s Office building in Toruń.

Your blood can save the health or life of another person. I appeal to everyone who can do so to take part in our action,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who can become a donor?

Blood can be donated by adults up to 65 years of age, healthy, who do not have any symptoms of infection, weighing not less than 50 kilograms. Those who apply to donate blood should carry a photo document proving their identity and PESEL number. Before donating blood during the day you should drink about 2 liters of fluids (mineral water, juices), be rested, eat a light meal, eliminate animal fats from your diet if possible, limit smoking and do not drink alcohol (also on the day before donating blood).

Donating blood is safe – only disposable equipment is used for this purpose, so there is no risk of infection with blood-borne viruses. A visit to the ambulance begins with filling out a questionnaire and registration, as well as taking a blood sample and a medical examination. The collection itself takes about 5-10 minutes (usually one unit of whole blood, or 450 ml, is collected), and is followed by a 15-minute rest, after which the donor receives the caloric equivalent (chocolates and juice). For more information, visit the Blood Donor Center website.

The ambulance of the Regional Center for Blood Donation and Hemotherapy will park on the square in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, December 19. The staff will be waiting from 1 to 5 pm.

According to the Statistical Office in Bydgoszcz, we have more than 33,000 honorary blood donors in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship – that’s nearly 2 percent of the region’s population.
