New term for the European Corps of Councillors

One hundred and twenty delegates from municipalities and districts received their nominations to the European Corps of Councillors (ECC) today (11 February) from Marshal Piotr Całbecki. Local government officials were also congratulated at the Local Government Diplomacy Forum by Deputy Foreign Minister Anna Radwan-Röhrenschef and the president of the regional parliament, Elżbieta Piniewska. The ceremony took place at the Dąmbski Family Palace.

The European Corps of Councillors, which was set up two years ago on the initiative of Marshal Piotr Całbecki, based on a similar solution in French Normandy, is the only such body in Poland. This further initiative within the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship Local Government Forum is a platform for cooperation, exchange of experience and promotion of good practice in the field of local and regional development, with particular emphasis on EU development support.

Members of the European Corps of Councillors met nine times in the previous term (2023-2024) and visited the voivodeship office in Brussels and European Union institutions.

The delegates, who on Tuesday (11 February) received their nominations for the new term of 2024-2029, were nominated by the councils of municipalities, cities and districts.

The Corps is to promote the ideas of the European Union,’ stressed Marshal Piotr Całbecki. – I believe that this body will build the confidence of the voivodship’s inhabitants in European structures and show them the benefits of our presence in the community.

The host of the voivodship added that the ECC will be an important support for the regional government in taking initiatives in the European forum.

This is a very valuable initiative. It is also important because it comes from the self-government. European policy today requires the involvement of citizens, and the format of the European Councillors’ Corps brings it closer to the people of the region in practical terms and allows them to use the tools provided by European projects. We will support the activities of the Marshal and the European Councillors‘ Corps,’ declared Deputy Foreign Minister Anna Radwan-Röhrenschef.

– I am convinced that, thanks to your creativity, many interesting ideas will be realised,’ the president of the regional parliament, Elżbieta Piniewska, addressed those present at the meeting.

After the ceremony, local government officials took part in the Local Government Diplomacy Forum. They listened to a lecture on international cooperation of regional governments and the tasks that the European Corps of Councillors will perform in the new term.
