National Independence Day

Regionak celebrations of the National Independence Day took place on Tuesday (11 November) in Toruń and Bydgoszcz. The residents of the region were invited by Marshal Piotr Całbecki, Voivode Michał Sztybel, the mayors of Bydgoszcz and Toruń, and the commanders of the military garrisons in both capitals of the region. In addition to official ceremonies, the program included historical reenactments, shows, and workshops.

The ceremonies began early in the morning with the laying of flowers at monuments and plaques commemorating the heroes of the struggle for independence in 1918 and those who contributed to rebuilding the Polish state during the interwar period. Solemn Holy Masses for the Homeland were celebrated in the Bydgoszcz Cathedral and St. Catherine’s Church in Toruń. The official patriotic ceremonies were held at the Old Market Square in Bydgoszcz and the Old Town Market Square in Toruń.

The November 11th events with a picnic character — historical reenactments, art workshops, outdoor games, group singing, and demonstrations — attracted great interest. They took place along the Philadelphia Boulevard and at the Children’s Art Gallery and Centre of Creativity in Toruń, as well as at Bydgoszcz’s Old Market Square.

Tradition was also upheld in Przysiek near Toruń, where crowds of residents from across the region participated in the annual Goose Meat Festival.
