Musical Theatre Guests at Od Nowa: Jesus Christ Superstar!
The famous Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice takes the stage at the Od Nowa club in Toruń tomorrow (April 4). This fresh take on the legendary rock opera is brought to life by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Musical Theatre under the direction of Agnieszka Płoszajska.
The story, told from Judas’ perspective, focuses on the final days of Jesus. Originally composed between 1969 and 1970, the musical gained worldwide fame with its powerful soundtrack. It inspired numerous album recordings and a 1973 film adaptation. Initially seen as controversial and even boycotted by religious groups, it has since become a cultural phenomenon. The Polish libretto, written by Wojciech Młynarski and Piotr Szymanowski, premiered in 1987 at the Musical Theatre in Gdynia, directed by Jerzy Gruza.
The Toruń adaptation sets the story in a contemporary world, among young people searching for meaning, including in Christian spirituality. The production follows an immersive theatre format, eliminating the traditional division between stage and audience.
Tickets for the premiere are already sold out. The show will run daily until April 13 and will return in September for school performances.
