Members of the European Committee of the Regions in Toruń during the World Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26

At the invitation of Marshal Piotr Całbecki, members of the European Committee of the Regions serving on its Commission for Natural Resources (CoR NAT Commission) will arrive in Toruń tomorrow (March 18). The study visit (March 18–22) will include, among other things, a seminar devoted to the impact of sport and tourism on public health and sustainable local development.

Tomorrow’s seminar takes place on the eve of the World Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26. The championships themselves will serve as a basis for discussions among NAT members—local government representatives from across Europe—on how major international events of this kind can help promote grassroots sport, active tourism, and healthy lifestyles, as well as act as a positive driver of sustainable development.

It is very valuable that members of the Committee of the Regions—the most influential local government representatives in Europe—are our guests at this particular time. Thanks to this, we can present not only what we are proud of on a daily basis, but also our potential as organizers of major sporting events and as a community capable of using such events to build an international brand,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The opening session, during which Marshal Piotr Całbecki is expected to speak, will be attended by, among others, Nino Berdzuli, Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Office in Poland, and Bob Ramsak, responsible for sustainability issues at World Athletics.

The seminar program also includes two thematic panels. The first focuses on sport as a catalyst for innovation and development, and on the practical implementation of the idea of healthy communities. Speakers will include Deputy Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska, Prof. Bogusław Buszewski (President of the Jan Czochralski Science and Technology Center), Jerzy Eliasz (Director of the Institute of Sport), and Adam Banaszak (President of Toruń Sports Infrastructure).

The second panel will address the effective use of sport in building strong regional brands. Panelists will include Oriol Freixa Matalonga (UNESCO), Jacek Gajewski (Chair of the Sport and Tourism Committee of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Assembly), Matteo Bianchi (member of the Committee of the Regions from Morazzone in Lombardy, Italy), Beata Sawińska (Plenipotentiary of the Marshal for the organization of the Championships and President of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Tourist Organization), and athlete Adam Kszczot.

NAT members, who will also be guests of the championships, will visit spa infrastructure in Ciechocinek and explore key tourist attractions in Toruń.

The CoR NAT Commission is one of the thematic commissions within the Committee of the Regions. It deals with a wide range of issues related to sustainable development and environmental protection, including tourism and public health. The chair of NAT is Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
