With the participation of Marshal Piotr Całbecki and Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski, regional celebrations of the Republic of Poland’s Flag Day and the National Day of the Third of May were held in Toruń and Bydgoszcz.

The 3rd May Constitution is a reason for pride and glory for our nation. A nation that can afford to carry out reforms without bloodshed, that is not afraid of necessary changes. Being a Pole is a privilege and an honour,’ said Marshal Piotr Całbecki in his Saturday (3 May) speech at the Old Town Square in Toruń. – Today (…) we are walking in a joyful procession under the white and red flag, a banner that symbolises joy and pride, but also (…) the blood (…) of generations of Poles who laid down their lives for freedom. Let us remember them when we stand against each other, when we seek not what unites, but only what divides.

In conclusion, the regional host quoted Pope John Paul II: – ‘May the same truth and wisdom expressed in the May Constitution shape the further future of the Republic in the spirit of justice and social love for the good of all people and the glory of God himself.’

In his speech, Deputy Marshall Zbigniew Ostrowski, who represented the regional government during today’s celebrations in Bydgoszcz, pointed out the importance of the 3rd of May Constitution as the leaven of Polish constitutionalism. – Unfortunately, (…) it was overthrown by Russian armed intervention supported by the native camp of treason. (…) However, it remained a symbol and a challenge. For generations to come, its memory helped sustain Polish aspirations for independence and the creation of a just society. (…) Today, once again, the situation requires us to be ready to meet the challenge. (…) As long as we can [communicate], we will be a community,’ he stressed.

The regional government, the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship governor, municipal governments of both regional capitals and the Polish Army were the organisers of the provincial celebration of the Polish Flag Day and the National Day of the Third of May. The regional government was also represented at the ceremony by the voivodeship secretary Marek Smoczyk (in Toruń) and the voivodeship councillor Anna Niewiadomska (in Bydgoszcz).
