Kujawsko-Pomorskie Closer to Space
As part of ESA Week – the World Space Week – the top students from primary and secondary schools, as well as young astronomy enthusiasts from the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Copernicus AstroBases, met today at the Toruń Planetarium with Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, a Polish astronaut of the European Space Agency.
Meeting Young People with an Astronaut
Students from AstroBases in Gniewkowo, Kruszwica, Rypin, Gostycyn, Zławieś Wielka, and Unisław attended the event in Toruń. Along with selected students from Toruń schools, they were invited to this special meeting. The conversation with the astronaut offered a unique opportunity to learn what daily life and work aboard the International Space Station (ISS) look like, as well as the tasks awaiting Poland’s ESA representative in future space missions.
Copernicus AstroBases – Education Under the Stars
The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Copernicus AstroBases form a unique network of astronomical observatories in the region, supporting space education and inspiring young people to reach for the stars. The Polish Astronomical Society oversees the educational programs at the AstroBases, ensuring a cohesive curriculum. Regular astronomy picnics, sky observations, and teacher training sessions also take place, helping to nurture students’ interests and shape future science popularizers.
Today’s visit to Toruń marks the beginning of a larger-scale project – the technological and scientific mission IGNIS “Poland Reaches for the Stars,” which will include a series of events at Polish universities featuring Poland’s second astronaut. The initiative is carried out by the Ministry of Development and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the Polish Space Agency, in cooperation with the European Space Agency.
Another opportunity to meet Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski in Toruń will take place on November 20, 2025 – this time at Nicolaus Copernicus University. The meeting will be open to the general public.
Today’s event is being broadcast live by the Space Popularization Center at Toruń Planetarium:
- Meeting with primary school students (grades IV–VIII) at 11:00
- Meeting with secondary school students at 13:00
