Krajeński Landscape Park invites you to the land of a hundred lakes
Nearly one hundred lakes, numerous plant and animal species, monuments worth exploring, and, for those active, hiking and cycling trails – these are the riches of Krajeński Landscape Park. It is the largest landscape park in Kujawsko-Pomorskie and one of the largest in the country.
“In the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, we have ten landscape parks, all worth visiting. Their values lie primarily in their magnificent nature with rare animal and plant species, numerous lakes, attractive hiking trails, and interesting tangible evidence of cultural heritage. I know of no one who doesn’t return here, often many times,” encourages Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
Krajeński Landscape Park was established in 1998 at the initiative of the local community, which wanted to preserve the unique natural environment, specific landscape features, and cultural and historical values of the Krajna region for future generations. Located in the heart of the Krajna Lake District, the park covers an area of over 74,000 hectares. It lies within the Sępólno, Tuchola, and Nakło counties. It is the westernmost part of the voivodeship and one of the largest landscape parks in Poland.
For active tourism enthusiasts, the Krajeński Landscape Park offers fourteen hiking trails leading to the most interesting natural and historical sites (list of trails). In summer, tourists are also drawn to the lakeside resorts, beaches, and swimming areas. The observation towers in Sępólno and on Lake Wieleckie, from where you can observe waterfowl, are also a popular attraction. The park also boasts monuments of sacred and secular architecture: the palace in Runowo Krajeńskie, the church and palace-park complex in Sypniewo, the Komierowski Palace in Komierów, and the stone and brick railway bridge in Obodowo, from which you can admire the picturesque Sępolenka River valley.
The natural richness of the Krajeński Landscape Park is particularly evident in its numerous rivers and nearly a hundred lakes. The largest of these are: Więcborskie (approx. 200 ha), Mochel (153 ha), Sępoleńskie (159 ha), Stryjewo (151 ha), Witosławskie (107 ha), and Lutowskie (156 ha). The park also contains the largest peat bog in the voivodeship – the Messy Nature and Landscape Complex – and five nature reserves: Lutowo, Gaj Krajeński, Buczyna, Dęby Krajeńskie, and Jezioro Wieleckie. The area also features numerous marshes and wetlands, which are a refuge for many protected plant and bird species. Park inhabitants include storks, herons, and the crane, the park’s symbol. Protected plants include yellow water lily, white water lily, martagon lily, and daphne mezereum. Owls also inhabit the Krajeński Landscape Park. Park staff provide visitors with information about the habits of these birds, including: as part of the annual nationwide educational campaign “Night of the Owls.”
The Krajeński Landscape Park is headquartered in Więcbork (Sępólno County). In recent years, the park has expanded to include a nature education center, which was officially opened in 2020 with the participation of Marshal Piotr Całbecki. A former fire station building was adapted for this purpose (more). The park has gained comfortable conditions for environmental education and a space for exhibitions, nature exhibits, and competitions. The total project value is over PLN 1,246,000, of which over 85% is European Union funding under the Regional Operational Program for 2014-2020.
