Join Us Tomorrow to Donate Blood

Despite advances in medicine, no substance has yet been created that could fully replace human blood. For the last time this year, on 18 December, a special mobile unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Bydgoszcz, where blood can be donated voluntarily, will be stationed at Theatre Square in front of the Marshal’s Office building in Toruń.

“Your blood can save another person’s health or life. I appeal to everyone who is able to do so to take part in our campaign,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who can become a donor?

Blood can be donated by healthy adults up to the age of 65 who show no symptoms of infection and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Anyone wishing to donate blood must bring an identity document with a photograph confirming their identity and their PESEL number. Within 24 hours prior to donation, donors should drink about 2 liters of fluids (mineral water, juices), be well rested, eat a light meal, eliminate animal fats from their diet if possible, limit smoking, and refrain from drinking alcohol (also on the day before donation).

Blood donation is safe – only single-use equipment is used, so there is no risk of infection with blood-borne viruses. A visit to the mobile unit begins with completing a questionnaire and registration, followed by a blood sample collection and a medical examination. The actual blood draw takes about 5-10 minutes (most often one unit of whole blood is collected, i.e. 450 ml). Afterward, there is a 15-minute rest period, after which the donor receives a caloric equivalent (chocolate and juice). More information is available on the website of the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre.

The mobile unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre will be parked in the square in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, 18 December. Staff will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

According to the Statistical Office in Bydgoszcz, there are over 33,000 voluntary blood donors in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region – nearly 2 percent of the region’s residents.
