Success in Three Acts: Performing, Writing, Translating

An interview with Zuzanna Orzechowska, graduate of the State Secondary Music School in Bydgoszcz, student at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, scholarship recipient of the Regional Self-Government, and laureate of the “Matura na 100%” project (as one of only two people in Poland to achieve a perfect score in all high school final exam subjects).

What does it feel like to be one of the best in Poland?

Initially, it was a huge surprise. I aimed for the highest results possible, but I never expected to achieve 100% in all subjects. Now that I’ve come to terms with it, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and contentment.

What was your study strategy like? Which learning methods helped you the most?

My keys to success are dedication and, above all, consistency. Each subject required a slightly different approach. The most demanding were subject-specific competitions in Polish and music history. For mathematics, practice tests proved effective, while preparing for the advanced English exam, regular exposure to the language helped me the most. The only common factor was the time devoted to learning.

Was there any subject that you found particularly challenging?

I was incredibly fortunate not to encounter any significant difficulties. I approached the final exams calmly, confident that I would pass each one. The biggest surprise for me was my math result—I estimated it at 80-90%. I was worried about mistakes caused by distraction or stress. I believe that composure is the greatest secret to my success.

How do you maintain a balance between studying and resting?

The breakthrough for me was understanding that all my passions, relationships, and activities not directly related to studying aren’t obstacles to achieving my goals but vital support. These activities are part of my identity and allow me to gain deeper insights from the knowledge I acquire. However, it’s essential to have clear priorities—for me, studying has always been the top priority. At times, this meant sacrificing leisure time, but I don’t regret a single minute.

What are your goals for the coming years?

I am currently studying viola performance at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. I’m very happy with where I am right now, so I plan to stay here for the time being. What does the future hold? Certainly, humanities studies—probably some form of philology, with the intention of eventually pursuing translation studies.

I would be happiest making the correspondence of the arts the center of my life. I want to perform, write, translate, and engage with music and literature on many levels, intertwining and merging them. I’m delighted that, thanks to my results, these opportunities are within my reach.
