In Chorabie, in Toruń County, flowers were laid at the memorial obelisk commemorating Jewish women murdered at the end of the Second World War. The ceremony, held on 27 January, was attended by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Secretary Marek Smoczyk; the President of the Board of “Solidarni – Toruń Pamięta” and President of the Council of the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation Jan Wyrowiński; the President of the Toruń City Council Łukasz Walkusz; the Vice-Mayor of Toruń Rafał Pietrucień; and the Head of the Łysomice Municipality Piotr Kowal.

“On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, let us remember the innocent victims of the extermination – people who fell victim to genocide and a criminal system of violence. It is our shared duty to remember and to do everything in our power to ensure that such tragedies never happen again anywhere in the world,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Today, flowers were laid at the stone commemorating the victims of the camp for Jewish women in Chorab near Toruń, a subcamp of the German Stutthof concentration camp. The delegation then paid tribute to the murdered by laying flowers at the mass grave of Jewish women from Chorab at Municipal Cemetery No. II in Toruń. The commemorations concluded with the laying of flowers at the plaque commemorating the synagogue in Toruń at 10/12 Szczytna Street – a temple destroyed by the Nazis in 1939.

On a daily basis, the obelisk is cared for by the school community of the Primary School in Świerczynki, which looks after this site of memory and passes on its significance to future generations. Next to the obelisk is a plaque with a historical note prepared by Dr. habil. Sylwia Grochowina of Nicolaus Copernicus University, a researcher of the history of the Holocaust and author of the book “The Toruń Holocaust. The Fates of Jewish Women from the KL Stutthof Subcamp Known as Baukommando Weichsel in the Light of Accounts and Memoirs of Survivors and Witnesses,” in which she documents the tragic fate of the women imprisoned there.
