In the footsteps of Helena Grossówna in Toruń – come and see the exhibition!

Helena Grossówna, an actress, dancer and participant in the Warsaw Uprising, died 31 years ago. On Thursday (3rd Thursday), a vernissage of the photo exhibition ‘In the footsteps of Helena Grossówna in Toruń’ will take place in the reconstructed house where she spent her youth (at Wola Zamkowa Street). More information on the website of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Heritage Centre.

The reconstructed building reminds us of Toruń full of half-timbered buildings, which are becoming increasingly rare. We are preserving this heritage so that it will appeal to future generations on a par with Gothic architecture. We pay tribute to all those who built and lived in such buildings,’ emphasises Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Born in 1904, Helena Grossówna spent her youth in a house on what was then Wodna Street (today PCK Street). She graduated from the ballet school in Toruń. She performed in theatres in Toruń, Bydgoszcz, Poznań and Warsaw. She made her cinema debut in 1935. During World War II, she joined the Home Army. She took part in the Warsaw Uprising, after which she was imprisoned in prisoner-of-war camps in Germany. After the war, she returned to Poland. She performed in theatres and film productions. She died in 1994. See also ‘Helena Grossówna. Never lose hope’ (comic book)

Her family home was threatened with demolition. After being entered in the register of monuments, the property was taken over by the regional government. In 2022, the building was inventoried and demolished, and its elements were transported to Wola Zamkowa Street, where it was reassembled using original elements and supplemented with reconstructed elements.

The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Heritage Centre received funding for the reconstruction of the house from our Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020. The substitute investor was the company Kujawsko-Pomorskie Inwestycje Regionalne.
