Honors for Professor Araszkiewicz
Prof. Aleksander Araszkiewicz – an outstanding psychiatrist and psychotherapist connected with our region and Bydgoszcz’s medical community, as well as a scientist, academic teacher, and social activist – has been awarded the highest regional distinction, the Gold Medal of the Marshal of the Region Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis. The ceremony took place last Friday (September 26) during the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Forum of Community Psychiatry, held in the Senate Hall of the Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology.
The professor’s current and past functions could easily fill the careers of several people, each with an impressive list. We will focus only on his current and most important ones – he is the regional consultant in psychiatry, president of the Foundation for the Development of Regional Psychiatry, president of the Association for the Prevention of Social Exclusion of People with Mental Disorders Most, expert of the government’s Committee for Scientific Research, chair of the Regional Team for the Implementation of the National Mental Health Protection Program, and disciplinary officer of the main board of the Polish Psychiatric Association.
He was born in 1946 in Józefów (Wielkopolskie Region). He studied at the Military Medical Academy, later conducting research at his alma mater. He holds the rank of colonel in the Polish Army. In 1994, he became affiliated as a researcher, physician, and educator of successive generations of young doctors with the academic medical center in Bydgoszcz. As a scientist, he studied, among other things, neuroses, anxiety, dementia, and the social consequences of mental disorders for patients. In recognition of his contributions to Polish psychiatry, he was awarded the title of honorary member of the Polish Psychiatric Association. His signature is also inscribed in granite on Bydgoszcz’s Avenue of Autographs.
During the Forum of Community Psychiatry, where participants discussed the role of strong, supportive communities in mental health care, Prof. Araszkiewicz was presented with the Unitas Durat medal plaque by Vice-Marshal of the Region Zbigniew Ostrowski. In his speech, he emphasized that Prof. Araszkiewicz – also due to his social and educational engagement – is an exceptionally popular and respected figure in Bydgoszcz.
