Health security and medical data security on the joint agenda of the UN and the Committee of the Regions
The document setting out the principles of cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) was signed today (26 March) by Marshal Piotr Całbecki on behalf of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR).
The WHO is a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) dealing with public health on a global scale, the CoR, which brings together representatives of local and regional authorities from all EU countries, is the voice of local and regional communities in Brussels. The document signed today, with arrangements in place from now until the end of next year, is a plan covering joint action between the two structures in the fields of broader health security, mental health, women’s health, non-communicable diseases and dedicated digital tools for medicine, and in response to the challenges to health care posed by existing deficits in public health services, an ageing population and climate change. The collaboration includes, among other things, technical and expert support and interaction on scientific research and publication grounds.
On behalf of the WHO, the plan was signed by the Director of the Regional Office for Europe, Belgium, Hans Henry P. Kluge. Marshall Piotr Całbecki affixed his signature in his capacity as chairman of the Natural Resources Committee (NAT) of the European Committee of the Regions, which focuses, among other things, precisely on public health in its work. The CoR and WHO have been working together since 2016.
