In the presence of Marshal Piotr Całbecki, another agreement was signed under the regional program for restoring roadside avenues. Nearly 500 trees will be planted this spring along the Chełmno bypass and on sections of Regional Road No. 551 in Unisław (Chełmno County) and Regional Road No. 251 in the Barcin municipality (Żnin County). In autumn, additional roads are planned to be lined with tree rows.

“The restoration of green avenues is carried out to compensate for ecosystem losses caused by various infrastructure projects. Trees provide natural environmental protection – they shield against wind and erosion, offer shelter for insects and birds, and help maintain soil fertility,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “The planting program is an example of combining road infrastructure development with care for nature and our region’s heritage. We are working to give more Regional Roads a green character. For this purpose, we are allocating a total of 18 million PLN.”

The planting and three-year tree maintenance will be handled by Henryk Hinca Nursery from Dobrzyca in Wielkopolskie, under a contract worth 890,000 PLN. The agreement was signed today (March 31) by the contractor’s representative Marcin Hinca and the Director of the Regional Roads Board in Bydgoszcz, Przemysław Dąbrowski. The ceremony was also attended by Regional Executive Board Member Marek Wojtkowski, Vice-President of the Regional Parliament Katarzyna Lubańska, and representatives of local governments – including Chełmno Mayor Krzysztof Wypij, Pakość Mayor Michał Siembab, and Unisław Deputy Mayor Sylwester Kurdynowski.

The project includes site preparation, delivery of large saplings (at 1 m height, trees must have a trunk circumference of at least 20 cm), planting, care (fertilization and watering), and the creation of retention basins. Funding comes from the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze 2021-2027.

Regional Routes in the Shade of Maples

Along Regional Road No. 550, including the Chełmno bypass, 202 sycamore maples will be planted. This route was opened in the previous decade with EU funds from the first Regional Operational Program. A nearly 4-kilometer cycling path was also constructed.

The section of Regional Road No. 551 in Raciniewo (Chełmno County) will gain a green character as well. Over 100 common maples will line the entrance to Unisław from Bydgoszcz. This road was also modernized using European funds, and local cooperation enabled the construction of a safe pedestrian and cycling path.

Trees will again adorn Regional Road No. 251 between Barcin (Żnin County) and Pakość (Inowrocław County). 150 sycamore maples will shade the renovated road and new cycling paths built in cooperation with both municipalities.

Previously, new trees were planted along Regional Road No. 553 (Toruń – Wybcz, Toruń County) and Regional Road No. 266 (Ciechocinek–Zakrzewo, Aleksandrów County). Preparations are underway to tender the planting of trees and shrubs along additional Regional Roads, including:

• Regional Road No. 240 (Tuchola – Świecie)
• Regional Road No. 557 (Lipno – Rypin)
• Regional Road No. 543 (Paparzyn – Brodnica)

Record Spending on Roads

The Regional Road modernization program for the coming years will receive 2 billion PLN. Under the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze 2021-2027 (FEdKP 2021-2027), the regional program allocates 136 million EUR for road investments, including bypass construction. Some projects will also use central government funding (approx. 170 million PLN for bypasses and about 450 million PLN for other road expansions).
