Fall prevention – a programme for seniors

We invite seniors to participate in the Marshal’s fall prevention programme. Over a thousand residents of our region are taking part in this year’s edition.

Statistically, falls are more dangerous for seniors than traffic accidents. They result in various types of injuries, from minor bruises to serious fractures. It is well known that movement and physical exercise are the remedy. Hence the idea behind our programme, which we are implementing in partnership with local governments throughout the region” explains Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The programme is aimed at people over 60 living in municipalities, counties and cities that have declared their willingness to participate in the project. Some of the organisers have already started recruiting participants. The first classes will start in the autumn.

As part of the programme, seniors will participate three times a week in exercises specially selected for them, increasing their immunity and physical fitness, protecting them from osteoporosis and improving their well-being. They will also learn how to avoid dangerous situations, e.g. at home and on public transport, and how to stay fit into old age through healthy exercise and a proper diet. Participants are being recruited by the local authorities involved in the project.

The programme is coordinated by the Bydgoszcz-based Regional Centre for Sports Medicine Sportvita, which is responsible for training coaches, conducting educational classes for participants, qualifying and control tests, and substantive supervision of the entire programme.

Among the Marshal’s health prevention programmes, which we are continuing this year, are screening tests for abdominal aortic aneurysms and pneumococcal vaccinations for seniors.
