Stars of Polish and international athletics, medalists from the most important European and world competitions, gathered once again in Toruń for the Orlen Copernicus Cup. On Sunday, 22 February, athletes were cheered on and congratulated by Marshal Piotr Całbecki. Results are available on the official meet website: www.copernicuscup.pl. The event’s partner is the local government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

“These are competitions that have electrified fans around the world for years and attract the best athletes on the globe to our region. The presence of so many outstanding sportspeople confirms that Kujawy and Pomorze today rank among the most important indoor athletics centers in Europe,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki during the official opening. “The Copernicus Cup is, however, just the beginning of the sporting excitement. In just 26 days, the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena in Toruń will become the stage for the world’s best athletes during the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26. I already know that, as organizers, we are very well prepared. I am convinced that the fans will not disappoint either. See you at the World Championships!”

The winner of the women’s hurdles was Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas. With a time of 7.77 s, she set a new meet record. Other Copernicus Cup records now belong to Italian athlete Zanaab Dosso, who ran the world’s fastest 60 meters this season in 6.99 s, and French representative Azzedine Habbz (after the disqualification of Masalelea Tshepiso from Botswana), who finished the 1500 m in 3:32.56.

Jakub Szymański claimed first place in the men’s hurdles with a time of 7.48 s. Maria Żodzik won the high jump (1.98 m), while the pentathlon podium featured two Polish athletes: Paulina Ligarska in first place and Adrianna Sułek Schubert in third. In the women’s 400 m, Natalia Bukowiecka finished second with a time of 50.97 s. In the women’s 800 m, Anna Wielgosz came in second with a time of 1:59.47. In the men’s 800 m, Polish runners Maciej Wyderka (1:44.30) and Filip Ostrowski (1:44.72) crossed the finish line in second and third place, respectively.

In less than a month, the world’s best athletes will compete for top honors at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26. The competitions at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena in Toruń will begin on 20 March. Morning sessions will start each day at 10:05 a.m., while afternoon sessions will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday.
